When referring to your own connection, bandwidth is the total maximum capacity of your network or modem connection. A MODEMs bandwidth is measured in BPS. The more bandwidth you have, the faster you will be able to receive and/or send information.

If bandwidth is being shared, you will likely not be able to reach the maximum capacity of the bandwidth when other computers, users or other devices are utilizing the same line.

First and foremost we started our lesson about Networking Fundamentals. I have learned that networking devices are the vital tools for communication. We also discuss about the CLIENT/SERVER. Client is the one that makes a service request from another program and Server is the one which fullfills the request and also there are different types of network cables. The UTP, Coaxial Cable and Optical Fibers. UTP cable is the most popular  LAN cables and it consst of twisted pairs of metal adding RJ45, coaxial cable is a type of cable which used in televisions and and was also used as media in computer networking. We also discuss the three types of network the LAN, WAN, and MAN. LAN enabled multiple users in a relatively small geographical area to exchange files and messages, as well as access shared resources such as file servers. LANs separated by geographic distance are connected by a network known as a WAN. MAN is the interconnection between various LAN’s in a particular geographical area like a metropolitan city like Bombay.

As i have learned in our subject Data Communication I figured out that the basic components of network are the Clients and Servers. We defined Servers as a central storage point for files or application programs shared on the network. It also provide connections to shared peripheral devices.Clients are the computers being connected to the server and is being used by the users.

I have also learned that wiring and cabling are very important in a network. There are 3 types of wires the Twisted Pair, Coaxial and the Fiber Optic.Usually in the IT industry we used the Unshielded Twisted Pair Category 5 (10base2).

In connecting a cable it should have a hub, switches & routers.Hubs are simple devices that interconnect groups of users and it forwards any data packets they receive over one port from one workstation.Switches are smarter than hubs and offer more bandwidth and forwards data packets only to the appropriate port for the intended recipient, based on information in each packet’s header.Routers use a more complete packet “addresses” to determine which router or workstation should receive each packet.

In our school, the network that we used is LAN or Local Area Network wherein it has a shared Ethernet,a pair of servers and a shared analog modem connecting students and faculty to the internet one at a time.

Based on the information that i have learned in data communication, fiber optics can have the advantages and disadvantages. Fiber optics is kind of technology that uses glass (or plastic) threads (fibers) to transmit data. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves. Fiber optics has several advantages over traditional metal communication lines that gives more reliable service to the users. It have a much greater bandwidth than metal cables can be more sufficient in transmitting data. This means that they can carry more data to the much reliable way. This cables are less susceptible than metal cables to interference. Fiber optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal wires. Data can be transmitted digitally (the natural form for computer data) rather than analogically. The main disadvantage of fiber optics is that the cables are expensive to install. In addition, they are more fragile than wire and are difficult to splice. Fiber optics is a particularly popular technology for local-area networks. In addition, telephone companies are steadily replacing traditional telephone lines with fiber optic cables. In the future, almost all communications will employ fiber optics. This lesson gives me an interesting factor that will deal me to focus to this subject.

Networks consist of the computers, wiring, and other devices, such as hubs, switches and routers, that make up the network infrastructure. Some devices, such as network interface cards, serve as the computer’s connection to the network. Devices such as switches and routers provide traffic- control strategies for the network. And also i learned that client and server describes one possible relationship between two software applications in which the client makes a service request from the server. The client and server relationship can apply to two programs running on a single computer or two programs running over a network. In the case of a network, the client and server model provides a convenient way to interconnect programs that are distributed efficiently across different locations. Computer transactions using the client and server model are very common and it is likely you are involved with such transactions almost daily. And also we tackled about the 3 types of network the UTP, Coaxial, and Fiber Optic. The first one is the UTP or unshielded twisted pair is the most common kind of copper telephone wiring. It means that UTP is the ordinary copper wire that connects home and many business computers to the telephone company. The second one is coaxial the widely used for computer networks. Although more expensive than standard telephone wire. Lastly the fiber optic the most reliable wiring but also the most expensive than coaxial .This is all what I have learned in our first week of discussion.

Before I wasn’t familiar with regards to computer networking, I don’t even know what it means. On our first week we tackled about computer networking fundamentals and I have learned that it is a collection of individual networks, connected by intermediate networking devices, that functions as a single large network. The networking devices are the vital tools for communication. Whenever you have a set of computers or networking devices to be connected, you make the connections, depending on the physical layout and your requirements Depending on the physical layout or topology of the network, there are three types of networks. LAN stands for Local Area Network. These networks evolved around the PC revolution. LAN s enabled multiple users in a relatively small geographical area to exchange files and messages, as well as access shared resources such as file servers.WAN stands for Wide Area Network. The interconnection of various LAN’s through telephone network, which unites geographically distributed users is achieved through WAN. In short when we log on to the internet, we become a part of a WAN. MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network. It is usually the interconnection between various LAN’s in a particular geographical area like a metropolitan city like Bombay.

One way of understanding huge and complex technology such as networking is to be familiar with its components. Realize that you must know how they are related to come up with a network of connected computers. When there are a multiple computers connections, there is a server. The server act as the organizer of the activities going on in a network, it provides the services that fit to the clients. Examples of the services are File Server, Web Server, Database Sever, etc. Clients on the other hand are the computers connected to the server; could also be referred to as the users who avail the services provided by the server. Consider how are the computers connected, there is the use of networks devices like hubs, switches and routers, cables or the connected mediums, there is also operating system software and NIC (Network Interface Card). NIC are adapters, it provides two-way communication between computers and the network devices; these are installed on computers. There are several types of medium and there are these primary types, one is the UTP, which is the popular among the mediums, there is coaxial wire and fiber optics which is the most expensive. In selecting medium in planning to build a network in an office or Ethernet for different purposes, consider future updates and since technology nowadays innovates constantly. For fast transmission of data from workstation to workstation, a router can provide more bandwidth and can send signals specific to the intended receiver is helpful. Unlike the hubs and switches, routers are more superior. It uses a complete packet address in determining the exact workstation it intends to send, and it ensures that it moves across the most efficient path. It’s not that hard to build your own Ethernet, it’s a matter of dedication in reading and learning, information is everywhere, you just have to grab them.

In the world of computers.Based only on my research, the week before our classes started.I found out that Networking is the practice of linking two or more computing devices together for the purpose of sharing data. Networks are built with a mix of computer hardware and computer software. After I have read it, it’s quite interesting for me. And I felt excited to know more about it with the help of our Professor Mr. Joseph Yamit.

In our first week of class, we tackled about what is client & server. And I have learned that client/server describes the relationship between two computer programs in which one program, the client, makes a sevice request from another program, and the server which fulfills the request. Although the client/server idea can be used by programs within a single computer, it is a more important idea in a network. In other word, in a network, the client/server model provides a convenient way to interconnect programs that are distributed efficiently across different locations, like computer transactions.

We also tackled about the differences between hubs, bridges, switches, and routers. That hubs is used to forward any data packets they receive over one port from one work, like e-mail, word processing document, etc. While switches join multiple computers together at a low-level network protocol layer with additional intelligence above that offered by hubs, which means that switches are smarter than hubs, because it can support multiple “conversations” and move much more traffic through the network than a hub, and also switches has a bigger capacity than hubs. Routers helps ensure that packets are traveling the most efficients paths to their destination. While bridges is needed by a switch for its features when providing MAN/WAN connectivity. It helps reduce congestion by keeping traffic unto network “backbone”.

I also learned that analog versus digital isn’t as simple as comparing one technology to another. That it depends on what product in some cases. Analog is the process of taking an audio or video signal (for ex. human voice) and translating it into electronic pulses. Digital, on the other hand, create sounds by working with digital representations of sound waves, in the form of binary numbers.

Also about the modem and routers. That router is a device which acts as an inteface between networks, which it is connected and can be more selective about the packets it passes on. While modem is a device that transmits and receives data over the plain old telephone systems analogue lines. We also discussed about Ethernet’s and other LAN technologies, like ATM or Asynchronous Transfer Mode, and etc.

I have learned so many things in our first week of discussions. And hoping that I will not forget any of those, because I easily forget things that I have already encountered about my subject concerns.

On our first week, I learned that a client server network composes a server and some clients. The clients request for services to the server and the server will then do the task. I also learned about cables used in networks. A network cannot be created without the use of cables, and there are three types of cables, one type is the most common, the UTP cable which is very affordable but has a lot of noise, another type is the coaxial cable which can handle a larger area than the UTP cable, and the last one is the optical fiber which can handle a very large area and can also handle more bandwidth. I also learned about some networking devices, these are the hubs, switches, and routers. These devices retransmit data signals and guide them to the pathways through the network.

In the world of communication, protocols made a big help to enable different devices such as cell phones, pc, IP phone and all other devices that is used for communication communicate with each other. All of these were possible because of this what we call protocol. So what is this protocol mean? It is a set of predetermined rules that is being followed by communicating devices. These devices used network protocol in communicating with each other. The concept of this protocol is like two people talking to each other, they should use one common language that both of them can understand. Also if one person is talking the other one should listen and vice versa. Lastly tell the person you are talking too that you have already finished talking. This process of communicating has been a standard in all kinds of conversation. This is the same way with devices communicating with each other, they follow protocol that has been approved by the networking industry and ratified by a standards organization.
