Between Clients and Servers

Before, my understanding about the server is to provide connectivity to the computers that is connected to it which by the way is called as client. As what I’ve learned from our discussions in the class, I’ve learned what a server really is. It is the central provider of the clients and is capable of many services like the file sharing of computers in a network. The clients request for files in the server. On the other way around, the server will provide the files needed by the client. Another scenario for a client-server environment is the electronic mail. The Yahoo Mail stands as the server and the user is the client. The client sends an email to another client. The email being sent to the other client is being forwarded to the mail server which is the yahoo mail. The mail server will be the one to forward the mail to the other client. It also provides us the basic services of the SMTP and of the POP.

Network Media

Like any other electrical devices, networking also uses cables and wirings in order to interconnect to each other. There are three primary wirings used in networking; the UTP, COAXIAL and OPTICAL FIBER. As an IT student, I have observed that the UTP is the most commonly used media in the networks. However, the most sufficient media among them is the optical fiber. Why is it so? It is because it can carry thousands and millions of signal in a single cable. It is not prone to any kind of noise because it does not use those wirings just like the coaxial and utp. The path being passed by the signals in the form of light is through a glass-like tube inside the optical fiber. It is usually used for backbone devices in the network.

My first journey to data communication

Before I took up Data communication, the idea that pops my mind is that Networking is an explanation of the engineering of the networking connection and it is the answers to our questions that wedged in our head like how things work. It really bothers my mind, and I keep on asking why is that I can surf to the internet using the telephone connection and what’s with the switch that I saw in our school computer laboratory. Because of this various questions, taking up Data communication subject will really furnish us especially to our IT careers.

For the past three months taking up this subject, some questions are bit by bit answered. Like the concrete explanation of the Client and Server design. Basically, it involves the interaction of the source which is the server and the destination which is the client. Furthermore, because of the clear example given to us by our professor like the communication of the two people using a telephone the caller and the receiver, gives us a clear definition or design in this client-server technology in physical and logical way. Not only that, we fully understand more the fundamentals of networking technology because of the OSI model, a model that explains to us the step by step procedures of networking.

In OSI model, the first is the Physical layer which are the cables, and the networking devices except for the router, then the data Link Layer which is deals Mac address from the LAN card, then the Network Layer that deals with IP addresses, Then the transport Layer deals with segmentation, then the session, the presentation and the application layer are deals with the presentation of the data.

I also learned the basic specification of the networking media, the optical fiber, the UTP, and of course I now comprehend how wireless works, and now I can specify what the best WLAN specification for a notebook is.

In addition, Protocols which are the sets of instructions, packets, frames, segments etc. were a foreign word to me, but reading the slides, the book, hearing the discussion is now clear to me and also to my classmates, though at first it’s hard to understand the other terms but as you read it again, it will be cleared to you. And now I understand the information that is in the network connection when I am connected to the LAN, I know now the importance of IP address located in my LAN status, it is like a telephone number that is being dialed whenever someone want to communicate with you.

So, that’s it, I will post for more valuable and very essential learning I will have in this subject and I am looking forward for the next lesson we will take.

client-server architecture

As far as networking is concern, the client-server is an architecture where in the client initiates requests, waits and receives files and typically interacts with the end-users through a graphical user interface. The server, on the other hand accepts its requests, processes them, and returns the requested information to the client. Through this architecture, sharing of files and resources is possible. People might be unaware but this architecture is being used in their day-to-day activities. For instance, when accessing the World Wide Web. Many people nowadays are being hooked up on the internet. Whenever people access a website, they become clients of that certain website. In addition, the server which is coming from the website provides the necessary information requested by the people accessing it. Same as true with the online chatting; an example of this is the yahoo messenger. Two people or more serve as the clients while the server is the application that they are using to communicate with each other.

I have learned that typically a computer network is composed of computers that are connected together by various forms of medias that share certain services. A computer network may either be peer to peer or a client server type of network. In client server environment there is a server which offers the services and a client who uses the services offered by the server. While in a peer to peer type of network all the computers connected are shares all information in the network. A computer network also uses different forms of networking medias like copper, fiber optics and the wireless. Computer networks make use of different types of protocols. I’ve also learned about the difference between Ethernet and Fast Ethernet, baseband and broadband, routers, switches, bridges, and the different layers of the OSI model and TCP/IP model.

- Stephen John Arinto

Based on what I have learn on the previous discussion about client/server, Servers serve as the main storage for files or application programs shared in other computers, called clients. Server also is simple a running software that enables it to serve specific requests from other computers, called “clients.” Sometimes a server serves as a central point in a network which provides services to the clients connected to it. An example of this is when you are using yahoo mail; the yahoo mail serves as the application or service provided by the yahoo (the server) then you as the user/member us the client of that particular server.

“Computer Networking”

A field in Information Technology that concentrates it’s topics on building and securing computer networks. It emphasizes in learning the basics of building or establishing a small or even a large network. The curriculum concentrates in the basics of computer networking because you must first obtain the basic knowledge and skills required in establishing a network. It(the course) aims to make students learn or obtain the necessary knowledge and skills of a network engineer. It covers from the concepts of computer networks until router configuration(hopefully). We’ve recently been tackling about Packet Switching and Network Topology. The more recent topics discussed to us by our professor/instructor/coach, Mr. Joseph Yamit, really helped us a lot in understanding how a network works and basically, what a network is. We’ve also tackled about networking media, definition of terms related to the course, client-server processes, network connectivity, differentiating various networking technologies, baseband, broadband, network structure, comparing and contrasting TCP/IP and the OSI model, their layers, Ethernet Fundamentals, MAC and IP addressing, data encapsulation, networking protocols and etc.. Got to review more ‘coz this is really a great opportunity to know on how to deal with and build networks. Study, practice or hone thy skill, that’s the key factors needed in pursuing this course.

By the way, the last batch of CCNA students already started pursuing the course last December 2007. I don’t know if Mr. Yamit is still accepting students to be enrolled in the course but i do encourage you, still, to join the academy. It is fun. You’ll learn more about the field in Computer Networking and its cheap, and is recognized INTERNATIONALLY. Well, just as Sir Yamit said, “The opportunity is there, it would be your decision if you’d grab it or not”. I made my choice, i grabbed it and is able to benefit a lot.
